• Immobilization of trifluoroacetic acid on the core–shell particles.
• Catalytic activity of super acid/ionic liquid-supported nanocatalyst.
• Supported organocatalysis for Friedländer synthesis of quinolines.
• Simple recoverability and reusability of magnetic heterogeneous acid.

A specific task magnetically recoverable trifluoroacetic acid-immobilized Fe3O4@SiO2–APTES core–shell nanocatalyst was prepared and characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, CHN, TEM and DLS. This super Brönsted acid supported catalyst exhibited catalytic activity for the Friedländer synthesis of quinolines using various cyclic and acyclic dicarbonyl compounds under solvent-free condition.

Trifluoroacetic acid is attached electrostatically to the aminopropyl groups of modified silica. The ionic interactions between ammonium and trifluoroacetate led to the formation of ion pair on the surface. This bifunctional nanocatalyst, super acid/ion pair, exhibited catalytic activity for the Friedländer annulation-based synthesis of quinolines.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
