This paper describes the syntheses, characterization and energetic properties of closo-dodecaborate salts with nitrogen based cations. The salts were produced in good yields by metathesis reactions of Ag2(B12H12) in deionized water, with simple filtration of the reaction mixture yielding the pure products. Thermogravimetric analyses established the thermal stabilities of these compounds. The enthalpies of combustion of these salts were determined using a constant volume bomb calorimeter; from these values the enthalpies of formation and heat evolved per kilogram of explosive were calculated. The entire study revealed that these salts, which were rich in boron and nitrogen, have the potential to find application in high-energy material science and technology.
The syntheses, characterization and energetic properties of closo-dodecaborate [(B12H12)2−] salts with nitrogen rich cations are described. The salts are rich in boron and nitrogen but can be handled safely and ignited easily. The thermal stabilities and energetic properties showed that the compounds are promising candidates as high-energy materials.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
