Sodium complex of a new metalloligand, [Na2(H2O)(Mo2O5L2)]n (1) {LH2 = 2-(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzylamino) acetic acid} has been synthesized from the reaction of Na2MoO4·2H2O with LH2. The sodium complex on reaction with MCl2·6H2O {M = Co or Ni} affords [Co(H2O)6][Mo2O5L2]·2DMF·H2O (2), [Ni(H2O)6][Mo2O5L2]·2DMF·H2O (3), respectively and on reaction with ZnCl2·6H2O affords the zinc complex of the metalloligand, [Zn(MeOH)2(H2O)2(Mo2O5L2)·H2O]n (4). The cobalt, nickel and the zinc complexes, 2, 3 and 4 on heating afford the corresponding nanostructured mixed metal oxide MMoO4 and MoO3 {M = Co or Ni or Zn}.

The complexes [Na2(H2O)(Mo2O5L2)]n, [M(H2O)6][Mo2O5L2]·2DMF·H2O (M = Co or Ni) and [Zn(MeOH)2(H2O)2(Mo2O5L2)·H2O]n {LH2 = 2-(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzylamino) acetic acid} have been synthesized and structurally characterized.
