Spin-orbit coupling and Jahn-Teller distortion in bimetallic oxalates

A Jahn-Teller distortion of the Fe(II) ions in Fe(II)Fe(III) bimetallic oxalates gains electronic energy but costs elastic energy. In compounds that exhibit magnetic compensation, the distortion only appears above the compensation temperature due to the competition with the spin-orbit coupling.
