Carbazole-based polymer bearing phthalocyanine groups with moderate glass transition temperature (Tg) for photorefractive purpose was prepared via esterification reaction. The precursor polymer (P1) and the resultant polymer (P2) were identified by means of 1H NMR, FT-IR, UV–vis, GPC and DSC. This approach was facile, and the analysis demonstrated that phthalocyanine had been successfully introduced into the polymer backbone. The molecular weight of the resultant polymer was 8729 (M¯n) and 27,809 (M¯w), and the polymer was easily soluble in common organic solvents such as CHCl3, DMF and THF, etc. Tg of the polymers ranged from 97 (P1) to 110 °C (P2) depending on the structure of phthalocyanine (Pc), and the polymers were relatively stable below 350 °C.
