• This study focuses on the relationship between crack formation behavior and glass structure.
• The (Q3 + Q4) / (Q2 + Q3 + Q4) ratio is closely related to the crack formation probability and Poisson's ratio.
• Both ion packing and connectivity of network-forming ions are important to design a glass with high crack resistance.
We investigate the effect of glass composition on crack formation probability in aluminoborosilicate (ALBS) glass. The ALBS glass base composition is 13Na2O-4K2O-6MgO-16Al2O3-12B2O3-49SiO2 (mol%). Various glass compositions are prepared by replacing SiO2 in the base composition with other oxides. Mechanical properties, including crack formation probability, are evaluated and their compositional variation is discussed in terms of glass structure. Lower crack formation probability results from larger concentrations of bridging oxygen atoms around Si in glass.
