• Novel BiBa2V3O11: Sm3+/Eu3+ phosphors are synthesized by solid-state reaction.
• The luminescent properties are well characterized and studied.
• The thermal stability and CIE coordinates are investigated in detail.
Novel rare-earth ions (Sm3+ or Eu3+) doped BiBa2V3O11 phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. BiBa2V3O11: Sm3+ phosphors emitted orange-red light under near-UV irradiation, and the strongest excitation and emission peaks were observed at 345 and 607 nm. Under the excitation of 345 nm, BiBa2V3O11: Eu3+ phosphors show the strongest emission peaks located at 622 nm corresponding to the electric dipole 5D0 → 7F2 transition. The critical quenching concentrations of Sm3+/Eu3+ in the BiBa2V3O11 lattice were 5 mol% and 8 mol%. The thermal stability of Eu3+ doped BiBa2V3O11 and CIE coordinates of BiBa2V3O11: Sm3+/Eu3+ phosphors were also investigated. The results indicate that these phosphors could be potential candidates for application in white LEDs.
