PbCaB2O5 doped with Eu3+: A novel red emitting phosphor

• A novel lead calcium diborate doped with rare earth element Eu3+ is reported.
• Facile and time efficient modified combustion synthesis method is used.
• The nanocrystalline structure was shown by X-ray diffraction, Williamson–Hall plots analysis.
• Transmission Electron Microscopy images confirmed the nanocrystalline structure.
• This phosphor can be excited in near-UV region at 393 nm and emits red colour.

A novel lead calcium diborate PbCaB2O5 doped with Eu3+ was synthesized by facile modified combustion method. The phosphor was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and the photoluminescence Emission (PL) and Excitation spectra (PLE). XRD patterns revealed that PbCaB2O5 has triclinic phase which can be obtained by combustion method at relatively low temperature. The FESEM images showed that the prepared phosphor consists of particles in the range of 40–65 nm. The TEM images confirmed the results shown by FESEM images. Upon 393 nm excitation, the phosphor showed red characteristic emission of Eu3+ peaking at 593 nm and 613 nm. Concentration quenching has been observed for Eu3+ concentration greater than 9 mol%. The emission spectra revealed the feasibility of this phosphor as red emission phosphor in near UV LED.
