• A neutral 1D coordination polymers of Cd(II) and Zn(II) silanethiolates have been synthesized.
• Metal ions are bridged by bipyridine derivatives bpea and bpey.
• Crystal structures of polymers show the presence of cavities filled with molecules of solvent.
• Polymers are stable up to 300 °C and display blue emissions.
Three new zinc(II) and cadmium(II) silanethiolate complexes [Zn{SSi(OtBu)3}2(μ-bpea)⋅CH3CN]n1, [Cd{SSi(OtBu)3}2(μ-bpea)⋅2CHCl3]n2 and [Cd{SSi(OtBu)3}2(μ-bpey)⋅C7H8]n3 with two bypiridine derivatives, [bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane and bpey = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their structures and properties have also been established with elemental analysis, IR, TGA and photoluminescent studies. Complexes 1–3 exhibit one-dimensional (1D) chain structures in which [M{SSi(OtBu)3}2] (M = Zn, Cd) units are held together by bpea or bpey bridges, respectively. Complexes are stable up to 300 °C and display blue emissions.
