► Random laser-like effects in the ground powder of NdxY1−xAl3(BO3)4 laser crystals. ► The decrease of the pump beam diameter increases the random laser threshold density. ► The increase of the Nd3+ concentration optimizes the output of stimulated emission. ► The increase of the Nd3+ concentration minimizes the random laser threshold energy.
