A series of Fe-substituted NiMnGa ribbons with a single β phase has been prepared by the melt-spinning method. The magnetization of the austenite phase increases greatly with Fe substitution. However, across the martensitic transformation, a large decrease in magnetization occurs. This reduction in magnetization can be up to 32 emu g−1 in Ni33Fe17Mn33Ga17 ribbons. As a result, a magnetic field-induced martensite–austenite transformation has been observed. A possible mechanism is discussed that is attributed to the change in coupling between Mn–Mn atoms.
► NiFeMnGa ribbons with a single β phase were prepared by melt-spun method.
► The substitution of Fe for Ni alters the Mn–Mn exchange coupling.
► A drastic drop of magnetization across martensitic transformation was observed.
► A magnetic field-induced martensite–austenite transformation happens.
