Phase redistribution in an in situ Mg-based bulk metallic glass composite during deformation in the supercooled liquid region

In situ Mg-based bulk metallic glass composites, containing 15–40 vol.% fraction of crystalline α-Mg flakes, were compressed uniaxially up to 60% reduction in the supercooled liquid (SCL) region. After large strains, there was substantial flake alignment towards the compression plane that generated a preferred crystallographic orientation of the flakes within the amorphous matrix. The degree of flake realignment, bending, and fragmentation was affected mainly by the degree of strain and the deformation temperature in the SCL region.
