Superplasticity in a fullerene-dispersed Mg–Al–Zn alloy composite

A 1 mass% fullerene-dispersed Mg–Al–Zn alloy composite with an initial matrix grain size of 2 μm was processed by extruding a mixture of magnesium machined chips and fullerene powder. The composite exhibited superplasticity, with an elongation of 256% at 548 K even at a relatively high strain rate of 10−2 s−1. The addition of fullerene had little effect on the flow stress, whereas it decreased the elongation by comparison with the alloy.
