In this paper, thickness evolution of electrodeposited nanocrystalline nickel due to its oxidation at elevated temperatures was investigated. A statistical model in-line with an analytical one is used for prediction of thickness loss of the nanocrystalline nickel during oxidation. For experimental validation, tests were carried out at 700, 750, 800, 850 and 900 °C. Mass gains of oxidized samples were determined and then converted into thickness loss. An excellent agreement between experimental data and model predictions was found.

► Time dependence of thickness loss of NC nickel does not obey normal parabolic kinetics.
► A new modeling framework for oxidation of NC materials has been presented.
► Excellent agreement between experimental results and the proposed model is observed.
