Turbostratic boron nitride (tBN) was synthesized using BCl3 and Li3N as the reactants by a solvothermal hot-press method, and the key factors affecting the yield were investigated. It was observed that some intermediates, such as Cl3B·NLi3, (Cl2BNLi2)n and (ClBNLi)n, formed when the reactants were heated to 250 °C, then they decomposed into tBN at higher temperature and pressure (i.e., 270 °C and 60 MPa). The investigation on the key factors indicated that, all the heating-up mode, heating rate and pressure were important in determining the yield of tBN. By analyzing the experimental results, a preliminary model was proposed by which the reaction process was briefly explained.
