Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with sugar phosphates have been prepared by the anion exchange reactions of [LiAl2(OH)6]NO3·H2O with glucose-1-phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate or fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. The orientation of the sugar phosphate in the interlayer gallery of the LDH can be inferred from the interlayer separation with the glucose isomers being oriented with their long axis almost perpendicular to the layers whilst fructose-1,6-bisphosphate is arranged so that the two phosphate groups interact with adjacent layers. A fourth polyol anion, gluconate, does not exchange into [LiAl2(OH)6]NO3·H2O, with these reactions leading to the decomposition of the LDH.
