In the present work, magnetic Co1−xZnxFe2O4 (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) granular films were successfully fabricated using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors by slurry coating technique. The aqueous slurries of CoZnFeIIFeIII-LDHs were cast on α-Al2O3 substrates and the resulting LDH precursor films were calcinated at 900 °C. The materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The results indicated that calcination of the LDH films gave rise to pure-phase Co1−xZnxFe2O4 granular films with surface porous microstructure. Moreover, the surface morphologies and magnetic properties of as-fabricated Co–Zn ferrite films could be tuned by varying the composition of ferrites.
