Electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization provide experimental evidence that the CdRE2W2O10 tungstates (RE=Y, Nd, Sm, Gd–Er) are magnetically disordered insulators with low relative dielectric permittivity (εr∼15). These results are characteristic for paramagnetic insulators having the screened electrons on the filled shells. Some of them behave like superparamagnets with the blocking temperature of 30 K, depending on strength of the spin-orbit coupling.

► CdRE2W2O10 tungstates are magnetically disordered insulators.
► The relative dielectric permittivity of CdRE2W2O10 is typical for germanium.
► CdNd2W2O10 and CdGd2W2O10 show superparamagnetic-like behavior.
► The stronger orbital contribution, the weaker the superparamagnetic effect.
