Carbon/iron-based nanorod catalysts for hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells

► We studied a new catalyst for hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cell. ► For the first time the Fe-C-N nanomaterial catalyst was developed in MECs. ► The nanorod materials exhibited a catalytic activity for proton reduction. ► A great advantage of this catalyst is its much lower cost compared with platinum.
