The three materials AA7108, AA7003 and AA6060, which can be parts of a typical bumper system in aluminum, were characterized in the present paper. Different tempers of the materials were studied. Through simple material tests including through-thickness compression tests, and quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests, material properties were identified for two material models that have recently been implemented in LS-DYNA. The models consist of isotropic elasticity, an anisotropic yield criterion, associated flow rule, combined non-linear isotropic and kinematic strain hardening, and strain-rate hardening. However, kinematic hardening was not used in the present work. The only difference between the two models is the anisotropic yield criterion. The identified yield surfaces of the investigated 7xxx and 6xxx alloys were quite different because of the different crystallographic texture. Furthermore, an automated procedure called the FLD calculator was here applied to generate ‘forming limit diagrams’ for the materials using LS-DYNA.
