► CWR is applied to hot working in the SIMA process before cold compression. ► The microstructural evolution of semisolid A356.2 alloy is studied. ► Increasing the compression ratio leads to finer spheroidal solid particles. ► Ostwald ripening dominates particle coarsening after particle fragmentation.
