The tensile properties of a near α Ti-alloy have been evaluated in both uncoated and diffusion aluminide (Al3Ti) coated conditions at room temperature (RT) and 600 °C. The effect of coating thickness on the tensile properties has been examined. The YS and UTS of the alloy at RT reduced marginally because of the presence of the coating, with the extent of reduction increasing with the increase of coating thickness. Such a trend in alloy strength was also observed at 600 °C. The RT ductility of the alloy remained nearly unaffected by the presence of the coating. However, an increase in ductility was observed in the coated alloy at 600 °C. The above effect of Al3Ti coating on tensile properties of the present near α Ti-alloy has been explained in terms of the influence of the through-thickness cracking in the coating during tensile testing.
► Tensile behavior of bare and Al3Ti coated near α Ti-alloy has been evaluated.
► The effect of coating thickness on the tensile properties has been examined.
► Such study has not been reported earlier and is being reported for the first time.
