Microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91D magnesium alloy prepared by compound extrusion

► A new severe plastic deformation (SPD) method is developed to fabricate fine-grained AZ91D magnesium alloys. ► Increase of accumulated strain leads to grain refinement. ► The mechanical properties of as-cast AZ91D are significantly improved due to grain refinement.
