Laser-shock peening and deep rolling were applied to an austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 and the effects on the fatigue life were investigated. Isothermal push–pull fatigue tests were performed in the temperature range 25–600 °C. The results of the investigations, e.g. s/n curves, cyclic deformation curves as well as the residual stress stability of the laser-shock peened condition were compared to untreated and deep rolled conditions. Near-surface regions were characterized using X-ray diffraction methods, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and focused ion beam microscopy (FIB). The different near-surface microstructures as well as residual stress stabilities of laser-shock peened and deep rolled specimens were investigated and discussed.
