Mass transport on adsorbate multilayers studied by surface plasmon polariton wave excitation

► We detect ultrathin-grating coupled surface-plasmon polariton waves (GC-SPPW). ► We measure mass transport in an ultrathin film from the evolution of GC-SPPW. ► Monomer detachment from step edges dominates mass transport in rare gas films.
