Simulation of the first growth phase of single-walled carbon nanotubes using a model based on a cellular automaton

► The thermal diffusion of carbon atoms in iron nanoparticles has been studied. ► The formation of the carbon clusters can start with the particle partially saturated with carbon atoms. ► It is not necessary for the catalytic particle to be saturated with carbon in order to start the nucleation process.
