Kinetics of titanium nitride synthesized with Ti and N2

The kinetics of titanium nitride synthesized with Ti and N2 at different temperatures were examined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. The maximum conversion degrees after 4 h were 0.55, 0.76, 0.93, and 0.96 at 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 °C, respectively. The reaction mechanism was analyzed through both model fitting method and ln-ln analysis method. Results showed that the reaction was initially controlled by nucleation and growth, as represented by the kinetic equation: [− ln(1 − a)]4 = kt, Then the reaction was controlled by three-dimension diffusion, as represented by the kinetic equation: [1 −(1 − a)1/3]2 = kt. Activation energies for the two stages were 214.84 and 124.01 kJ/mol respectively.
