Optimization of the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase synthesis

► We investigated Ti3SiC2 synthesis by SHS and pressureless argon shielding techniques. ► We investigated Ti3SiC2 synthesis using different staring reactant mixtures. ► The optimal silicon excess amount was proved to increase Ti3SiC2 purity. ► We obtained near to completely pure Ti3SiC2 by pressureless argon shielding technique. ► The strict control of heating showed a significant effect in the obtained Ti3SiC2 purity.
