W/NiFe phase interfacial characteristics of liquid-phase sintered W–Ni–Fe alloy

W–4.9Ni–2.1Fe was prepared by mixing elemental powders and pressing compact. The compact was sintered at 1500 °C and then cooled to room temperature at a cooling rate of about 10 °C/min in hydrogen environment. The qualitative element distribution in the two-phase composite has been examined by elemental mapping of X-ray, and the phase compositions across W-rich/NiFe-rich interface have been determined, thus suggesting it be possible to tailor the phase compositions through controlling the cooling rate in a temperature range between the liquid phase sintering temperature and about 1250 °C. TEM observation has proposed the orientation relationship between the W-rich/NiFe-rich phases to be {−2 2 0}〈1 1 2〉NiFe//{−220}〈1 1 1〉W. Much high density interfacial dislocations with a linear density of about 6.7 × 108/m has been observed, resulting in the phase interface to be an incoherent one.
