Better cutting solutions by making the right choices

Engineers seeking improved metal cutting solutions have in the past tried iron-cobalt-nickel (Fe(Co)Ni) based binder alloys, but with mixed success. Work carried out by German hardmetals specialists H C Starck has shown that one of the necessary conditions for improvement is proper choice of the binder alloy composition. It found that the Fe(Co)Ni binder alloy composition has a prevailing influence on the attainable tungsten content present in the binder after sintering, which in turn explains new hot hardness results, and allows proper alloy choice for metal cutting applications…
