Interactions between point defects and edge dislocations in copper

Molecular dynamics with an embedded atom potential are used to investigate the interaction between one, two or up to six interstitials and split edge dislocations in copper. Interstitials were trapped at the core of a partial dislocation and also the stacking fault (extended) layer connecting two partial dislocations in copper. The trapped interstitials were a split <1 1 0> crowdion type just below the slip plane. Interstitials trapped by a pair of partial dislocations are oriented in the directions perpendicular to the Burgers vector of the partial dislocations. Interstitials trapped at the extended layer were oriented in the direction parallel to the Burgers vector of the complete edge dislocation. The displacements of atoms surrounding the interstitials that are trapped at the extended stacking fault layer are in (1 1 1) planes.
