In this paper, a finite element (FE) model is firstly developed in ANSYS for the ST drive from Seagate. This model includes pivot bearing, HSA and disk. The FE model is verified by conducting a modal analysis of HSA. Resonant frequencies are compared with the modal testing results. Then the head slap behavior of the slider in the non-operating state is simulated with the implicit-to-explicit analysis function of ANSYS. A half-sine acceleration pulse is applied to pivot shaft and central zone of the disk at the same time. The lift-up height of slider is examined. Three typical locations of the slider over the disk are compared. It is found that when the slider is located at the edge of the disk, it is easier for the head slap to take place. Influence of boundary condition of disk on head slap behavior is also studied. It is found that when the disk is more tightly clamped, it is more difficult for the head slap to take place.
