We report on the basic characteristics of a capillary plate (CP) gas detector filled with a Ne(90%)+CF4(10%)Ne(90%)+CF4(10%) gas mixture. Both the charge and light signals were investigated. Gas gains of up to 104104 can be achieved with the gas mixture. The energy resolutions of the charge and light signals were 17.0% and 24.2% for 6 keV X-rays, respectively, at a gas gain of 104104. These results were compared to those obtained with an Ar(90%)+CF4(10%)Ar(90%)+CF4(10%) gas mixture. The emission spectrum of the gas scintillation light shows the presence of the atomic lines of Ne. There were also two broad continua attributed to CF4CF4. We exploit the scintillation light for the realization of a pixelized two-dimensional imaging gas detector. Sharp images of X-rays and a spatial resolution of less than 135μm were obtained using an optical imaging system consisting of a standard photographic lens and a CCD camera.
