• A free dendritic growth model with nonisothermal interface was proposed for pure materials.
• An exact solution was obtained for the thermal diffusion equation.
• Marginal stability theory was incorporated into the present model.
• It was demonstrated that the effect of nonisothermal interface is significant.
• The model gives a satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.
Considering the nonisothermal nature of the solid–liquid interface due to interface curvature and interface kinetics, a nonisothermal free dendritic growth model is proposed, by introducing marginal stability theory. Comparative analysis on the present nonisothermal model and the corresponding isothermal model demonstrates that the effect of nonisothermal solid–liquid interface is significant and it should be taken into account in modeling free dendritic growth. Furthermore, the present model provides a satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.
