An embryological study of Eriolaena candollei Wallich (Malvaceae) and its systematic implications
چکیده انگلیسی

A detailed description of male and female gametophytic development in Eriolaena candollei is presented to study the systematic affinities of Eriolaena within the Malvaceae s.l. Flowers are bisexual and tetramerous. Anthers are tetrasporangiate and cytokinesis in meiosis is simultaneous resulting mainly in tetrahedral tetrads. Anther wall development follows the dicotyledonous type and the tapetum is of the amoeboid type. Pollen is spinose and shed at the 2-cell stage. The ovule is anatropous, bitegmic, and crassinucellate with 4 or 5 layered parietal cells. The outer integument is demarcated first and grows faster than the inner integument. Both integuments are 3 cells thick. The megaspore archesporium is 1-celled and the tetrad is linear. The development of the embryo sac follows the Polygonum type. No degeneration of cells is observed in the course of male and female gametophytic development. Embryologically, Eriolaena is most closely related to traditionally circumscribed Dombeyeae but differs in a number of important features from the members moved recently to the Dombeyoideae from other traditionally circumscribed families. Two types of anther wall development and tapetum are found in subfamily Dombeyoideae and a further study of relationships within this subfamily is necessary.
