► A concurrent chain schedule was used to investigate pigeons choices between two contingencies of variation. ► The variability requirement was equal or different in both alternatives in the non-differential and differential conditions, respectively. ► Choices for the contingency with the low variability requirement were more frequent than choices for the high variability requirement.
