Instrumentation development: From MEG recording to functional mapping

This review in honor of Prof. Samuel J. Williamson, one of the pioneers in biomagnetism, discusses development of biomagnetic instrumentation over more than 30 years, from early single-channel magnetic detectors to state-of-the-art whole-cortex functional mapping magnetoencephalographic systems. Key technological advances that made today's commercial systems possible are emphasized but other developments and possible future trends are also discussed.
