The use and misuse of antibiotics in the neonatal intensive care unit

Antibiotic use in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is very common practice. It is crucial that providers remain judicious in their prescribing habits in order to treat presumed infections effectively while also avoiding the possible complications of unnecessary and inappropriate use. Antibiotic resistance, deadly infections, and lifelong complications can all stem from the misuse of antibiotics in the NICU. While research continues to identify tools to improve diagnosis and clinical decision making, providers must continue to remain cognizant of the possible negative outcomes of antibiotic use and tailor their interventions accordingly.
