A critical analysis of breastfeeding in a paediatric cardiac intensive care unit

Nurses, supported by the midwifery team have been identified as the key providers of health promotion in the hospital setting. The benefits of breastfeeding are well documented, particularly for neonates with congenital cardiac defects however, difficulties often arise in the promotion of breastfeeding in paediatric and neonatal critical care settings. To ensure maximum breastfeeding initiation all parents should receive accurate, complete and timely information about breastfeeding. Once uptake has been achieved continuation of the practice is the next stage. Parents need support and continued education tailored to their individual needs. Resources provided for breastfeeding can also influence uptake and continuation. Ensuring that there are adequate high quality breast pumps, milk storage facilities and food vouchers will allow the health choice to be the easy choice for parents. Finally the use of questionnaires during and after admission will ensure that breastfeeding promoting practices can be continually evaluated and enhanced.
