Preventing and Recognizing Venous Thromboembolism After Obstetric and Gynecologic Surgery

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a hypercoagulable disorder that is associated with two potential significant complications—deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE). During pregnancy and the postpartum period, the risk for VTE is increased. Prevention is optimal, but early detection and treatment of VTE in women after obstetric and gynecologic surgery is imperative, as DVT is often asymptomatic and, in many patients, clinical presentation only occurs after a fatal PE occurs.
