Outcome-based evaluation of student performance is required to evaluate student mastery of course objectives, validate efficacy of this simulation learning modality, facilitate reflection, and guide the debriefing process. To this end an evaluation matrix was developed integrating the American Association Colleges of Nursing BSN competencies and course objectives from a United States college of nursing baccalaureate program. Specific evaluated behaviors included assessment, critical thinking, patient care, communication, and professionalism. Analysis of this tool indicates it provides an effective method for consistent, outcome-based evaluation of student performance in simulation experiences across the curriculum. The tool was designed to be informative and efficient for faculty evaluators and students’ self-evaluation.
