Postpartum Newborn Nursing : Simulation Into Practice

Clinical nursing instructors face the challenge of engaging students in consistent, meaningful, and appropriate clinical activities within the constraints of limited clinical time in hospitals. Simulation exercises offer students real-life scenarios in which they can pose questions, test skills, and apply concepts and meaning to their newfound knowledge. In addition, simulation exercises may have the potential for increasing the skill level and confidence of nursing students, enabling students to spend more of their clinical time perfecting skills taught in simulation. Hospital staff provide positive feedback about student readiness when students have gone through simulation exercises. This article provides postpartum–newborn nursing clinical instructors with a step-by-step guide for incorporating simple obstetrical simulation exercises into their courses, which can enhance their students' performance.
