During this time of tumultuous change in healthcare, chief nursing officers (CNOs) are constantly on the run. The challenges of overseeing the practice of nursing, not only in the hospital, but also across the care continuum—including home health, hospice, and long-term care—are sometimes overwhelming. It is no surprise that turnover for CNOs ranges from 21% to 44%.1 and 2 Why so much CNO turnover? The top 3 reasons given are conflict with the chief executive officer (CEO), lack of power to make changes, and inadequate nursing personnel.3 Grappling with so many complicated issues, CNOs must rely on different strategies to overcome these challenges. Retaining top talent in the CNO role is instrumental as healthcare continues to quickly evolve.
