Every healthcare leader should be engaged in advancing accountable care in his or her organization. In order to be a knowledgeable contributor on the executive team, the healthcare leader must know the significant questions to ask about accountable care and be able to provoke innovative thinking and action. It is also imperative that leaders understand the strategies necessary for creating an environment of accountable care.The goal in many organizations is to improve quality and reduce healthcare costs without rationing care—and some will continue to focus solely on those efforts. However, such a course of action will not be enough. The rules are shifting, and current reimbursement is going to significantly change. In fact, proposed reforms are expected to have a 20% to 25% negative impact on government reimbursement.
