Lactose intolerance is a common problem in children and adults around the world. Treatment is relatively easy and focuses on reducing the consumption of milk and dairy products and other products containing lactose. However, some patients do not tolerate even the smallest amounts of lactose, symptoms may occur even after medications intake. Lactase supplementation also creates a therapeutic option. However, adequate calcium intake still remains an important problem. It is necessary to secure alternative sources of this macroelement. Type and duration of dietary modification will depend on the form of lactose intolerance and the level of lactase activity. The size of the possible lactose consumption in subjects with lactose intolerance is primarily determined by the level of the enzyme activity. Total exclusion of dairy products from the diet usually is not necessary because, as a rule, lactase activity is maintained. In the case of developmental and secondary hypolactasia diet is usually temporary, but in case of congenital hypolactasia it is permanent and must be fully restrictive. The tolerance of milk may be improved by relatively simple recommendations. The simplest one include reduction of onetime consumed portions of milk and milk products, preferably in addition to the meal, consumption of lactose-reduced dairy products, the choice of live cultures yoghurts and replacement of milk with hard cheese.
