Jan Witalis Bączkiewicz (1862-1932) was an eminent paediatrician. His thorough medical education in various European countries (Paris, Berlin) and in Cracow is presented widely. His achievements in therapy of diphtheria are described in more detail. His local therapy of diphtheria, serum therapy and intubation were presented with full particulars. The indications and contraindications for intubation were outlined.
