Human milk is the best nutrition for infants during the first six months of life and provides the optimal conditions for infant development. There are only a few contraindications when mother's milk is not recommended. Breastfeeding is not advisable in HIV, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I or II - positive, mothers who were receiving diagnostic or therapeutic radioactive isotopes and chemotherapeutic agents, or abusing drugs. In addition to the above there are some relative contraindications to breastfeeding. The knowledge about them is very important because of frequent questions from mothers about their milk being safe for the baby or the risk when they have an infection. In this paper we have described the current recommendations regarding breastfeeding in hepatitis A, B, C, chicken pox-, herpes simplex-, CMV-, tuberculosis-infected mothers. We also discuss the consequences of breastfeeding in diabetic mothers and those with atopic diseases.
