In countries where voluntary active euthanasia (VAE) is conditionally decriminalised, the law specifies the role of the doctor but contains little or no mention of that of the nurse. It is essential that the increasing numbers of people turning to VAE are given humanist and high quality support. Using a targeted literature review, we have identified a series of nursing roles throughout the VAE process. The nurse is likely to receive the request for VAE and to have to share it with the interdisciplinary team. They may be involved in the decision-making process. In these decisive moments, their advocacy role comes to the fore. They ensure the continuity of care in the time leading up to the VAE procedure, during which they assist the person, their loved ones and colleagues. They then support the patient's family and ensure that the VAE is declared in accordance with the law.
