The Need for Educated Staff in Sterile Processing—Patient Safety Depends on It

Sterile processing (SP) plays a vital role in patient safety. With ever-changing technology in surgical instrumentation, sterilization/disinfection methods, and monitoring, there is an increasing need for staff well educated in SP. Health care facilities need a standardized orientation program and consistent, on-going educational programs designed specifically for SP. Mandatory certification for SP professionals is a highly recommended, laudatory goal.
