Orthoptic rehabilitation for low vision is designed to optimize use of residual capacities. If the vision loss is central, the goal is to help the patient learn how to see differently with an optical aid. This is a very important phase of the rehabilitation process where the patient learns to appropriate the system and use it in daily life activities. The orthoptist explains existing aids to the patient and the need for customizing each aid to the patient's individual visual situation. The practitioner must recognize the right moment to introduce the aid, inciting appropriate gestures and strategies for optimal use of a complex tool. During the rehabilitation sessions, the patient learns about magnifying tools' capacities and limitations in order to make the right choice and enable valid evaluation by the optician.
